Brands Hatch – The final round…

Brands Hatch – The final round…

Having started the season at Brands Hatch in April, after a 6 months of racing, we were back at famous Kent Circuit for the final round of the 2013 Triumph Triple Challenge in association with the British Superbike Championship.

Going into the meeting the main objective was to secure 2nd in the championship & finish the season as runner up champion. Although starting the meeting with a 17 point cushion over 3rd place, I was apprehensive as i have never had much luck on the Grand Prix Circuit at Brands Hatch. However any pre meeting nerves were soon forgotten about after I posted the fastest time in free practice on a drying track, which i followed up with 2nd in qualifying, held in perfect track conditions, narrowly missing out on pole position by just 0.094 seconds!

I was chuffed to be starting from the front row of the grid and in doing so, seemingly banishing my previous poor form around Brands Hatch GP. I was feeling very happy with my pace in the dry and the bike set up was working well so i was looking forward to the races. However come the first race on Saturday, the weather had turned for the worse and we were faced with a wet race on a very slippery track. I played it safe and bought the bike home in a solid 3rd place, securing my 4th podium in a row. unfortunately my lead over 3rd place in the championship had been cut to only 8 points after Phil Atkinson took the victory. This made for some uneasy sleeping saturday night.

The weather didn´t improve for sundays race 2 either. I knew going into the race that i couldn´t afford to loose any more points over Phil, so I rode an aggressive first few laps of race and managed to slot into 2nd place. The grip levels were extremely unpredictable though and I knew a crash would ruin all chances of securing runner up in the championship. After a few big slides, I took a look over my shoulder and noticed that we had pulled a big lead over the chasing pack, in which Phil Atkinson was battling in. At the time i was sitting in the leading group in 4th place, in contention for the win. As much as i would have loved to finish the year off with a victory or another podium, i decided to ride with my head and let the leaders go and adopted a no risk strategy to bring the bike home in a solid 5th position which was enough to see my achieve 2nd in the championship. I was over the moon.

2013 has been a hell of a year with some massive highs and some utter lows but am proud to finish the year as Runner up Champion in the Triumph Triple Challenge with 3 victories, a lap record & 9 Podiums in the toughest & most competitive single make British Championship to date! Unfortunately 2 crashes earlier on in the year, coupled with some broken bones & nerve problems and then a low in morale dented my overall championship challenge but i am pleased with how i managed to get my focus & determination back to finish the season on a high with 4 podiums in the last 5 races. I want to say a well done to all the other competitors & Teams for making this one of the best seasons racing I´ve been involved in.

I owe a massive thank you to a lot of people for helping make 2013 the success its been.
